Diabetes is a chronic and incurable condition which
requires permanent treatment and management. The
situation is particularly worrying in developing
countries where detection is poor and insulin is not
always available. According to the estimation of the
International Diabetes Federation (IDF):*
•
285 million people, (6.4% of the adult population).
•
By 2030, it is estimated that 438 million people
will have diabetes (7.7% of the adult population).
•
A further 344 million people in 2010 suffer from impaired
glucose tolerance, which can often lead to diabetes.
This number is expected to rise to 472 million by
2030.
